When the sun rises in this view

From mid-November to late January the sun rises straight out of the sea to the right of the distant cliffs of Cap Canaille, at the official sunrise time. These are the best weeks for this view.

In October and from February to early March the sunrise moves left and the sun appears from behind the cliffs about 15–20 minutes after the official time. From mid-August to September and from mid-March to late April it rises behind the high cliffs of the Calanques and shows up only 50–60 minutes later. From May to mid-August it rises beyond the left edge of this view.

Vallon de Sugiton, Calanques National Park, 13009 Marseille, France · Open in Google Maps (opens in a new tab)

The viewpoint is on the path from the Luminy campus down to the Calanque de Sugiton, about 40 minutes on foot. In summer, access to the Calanques massif can be restricted on days with high fire risk, so check before you go, and bring a torch for a walk before sunrise.
