-
Calanque de Port-Pin, Cassis

From mid-August to late April the sun rises inside this frame, always from behind the ridge of Cap Canaille: in December close to the end of the cliffs, about eight minutes after the official sunrise time, and in spring and autumn above the highest cliffs, about half an hour later.

From mid-November to late January the sun rises straight out of the sea to the right of the distant cliffs of Cap Canaille, at the official sunrise time.
Through the year
La Ciotat gets about 15.4 hours of daylight around the June solstice and about 9 hours around the December solstice. On June 21 the sun rises at 5:57 and sets at 21:20; on December 21 it rises at 8:06 and sets at 17:05. The earliest sunset of the year is around December 9 (17:02), and the latest sunrise around January 3 (8:09).
The direction changes as much as the time. In June the sun rises in the north-east (56°) and sets in the north-west (304°); in December it rises in the south-east (122°) and sets in the south-west (238°). That is why the same viewpoint can show the sun over the sea in one season and behind the hills, or outside the view, in another.
